What’s the best way to deal with negative thoughts?
I saw this daily prompt and thought who am I to write on this topic as recently I have really been struggling to deal with negative thoughts. This might seem contrary to what you would think if you read my blog post on depression. If you haven’t read it:
Depression
However, just because I write a blog post on something and give advice on it does not mean I have conquered it completely; I wouldn’t say I am depressed but yes struggling to deal with my negative thoughts due to a range of factors. At the end of the day it is about trying to build yourself up and move on. I am going to use this daily prompt and blog post to serve as a reminder and advice for myself first as I do with a lot of my blog posts. So what do I think is the best way to deal with negative thoughts? I think one way is to try to suppress these thoughts when you can. Whenever you get a negative thought, try to think of something positive straight away to counteract it. Let’s give an example: “I think no one likes me” to “I know there are many people in my life who love me”. Try to spread positive vibes when you can.
As Muslims we believe in waswas from the Shaytan (Devil) and sometimes we can get these whispers from the Shaytan (Devil) and we need to be careful. We should seek refuge with Allaah from the Shaytan. Also, we can recite this dua:
اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنَ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ، وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ، وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ، وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ، وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ
Allaahumma ‘innee ‘a’oothu bika minal-hammi walhazani, wal’ajzi walkasali, walbukhli waljubni, wa dhala’id-dayni wa ghalabatir-rijaal
O Allah, I seek refuge in You from grief and sadness, from weakness and from laziness, from miserliness and from cowardice, from being overcome by debt and overpowered by men (i.e. others).
